DOPE Blog Music Unsigned

Next To Blow | 2013

2012 saw the birth and rise of many DOPE artists including Gotye, Fun, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Elle Varner, Bridget Kelly, Rita Ora, Emeli Sande, and many many more. So who does that leave for 2013? DOPEAvenue has you covered. Check out who we’re picking to be “NEXT” in 2013.

Imagine Dragons

A younger, cooler version of Coldplay? I’m all the way here for that. Signed to producer Alex Da Kid’s KIDinaKORNER Record label, indie rock band Imagine Dragons have been making quite the name for themselves in 2012. Their single “Radioactive” is really starting to create a big buzz on iTunes and radio, as is their song “It’s Time.” And their album Night Visions is a really great listen, if you’re into that Coldplay/alternative rock type of sound. They could very well be the Fun. of 2013.

Tinashe

Remember back in 2004 when a teenage Ciara burst onto the scene and she was the biggest thing in R&B music for a couple of years? Well, Tinashe, who has recently signed to RCA Records, could face a similar feat in 2013. Although, she’s more like Aaliyah mixed with Amerie, and less like Ciara. She has angelic vocals, an amazing body, and has a style that nobody currently in the game can compete with. She plays the piano, she’s classically trained in ballet & other dance forms, she writes her own music, she directs her own videos…she’s the complete package. 2012 gave us Jhene Aiko and Dawn Richard. 2013, Tinashe will blow up.

Ro James

Luke James. Frank Ocean. Elijah Blake. The Weeknd. Miguel. They all blew up in 2012, making the genre of male R&B exciting again (something it hasn’t been in a long while). In 2013, this is definitely another name to add to that growing list. Taking inspiration from people like D’Angelo and Maxwell, Ro James definitely has next. He’s like all the guy I mentioned above, mixed into one body, but with a more eclectic taste. I don’t know if you got the picture, but what I do know is that 2013 is going to be a big year for him.

Tori Kelly

It’s been a while since we’ve had a young, TALENTED female pop artist emerge. I mean, I guess you could categorize Taylor Swift as that (and Rita Ora), but I’m talking pure pop. Someone who can sing, play instruments, captivate an artist, without having to rely on studio magic and trendy productions. But California girl Tori Kelly could very well be that girl. She has the voice, the look, the artistry, the “X” factor. All she needs is a label that believes in her talent. Could she be the next big thing in pop?

Fifth Harmony

As I said with Tori Kelly, it’s been a while since we’ve had a young, talented female pop artist emerge. But, it’s been even longer since we’ve had a young, current female pop girl group emerge. We had Danity Kane for a few years, but the girls couldn’t get their shit together, and ultimately disbanded in 2008. The Pussycat Dolls suffered the same exact fate around the same exact time. So that left a lane in the pop world WIDE OPEN and it has yet to be filled. But Fifth Harmony, the girl group created by Simon Cowell on X Factor USA, is all but guaranteed to fill that void. Since coming in third on X Factor two weeks ago, the girls have already signed to Sony Music as part of Simon’s Syco label: the very label that happens to be home to One Direction. So if Simon can pull off just 50% of what he did with One Direction, these girls will be HUGE next year.

Schoolboy Q

Predicting who’s going to be the next big thing in Hip Hop is harder than every other genre because Hip Hop, more than any other genre, likes to co-sign the whackest of whack people. Record labels also give these whack artist million dollar recording contracts, just based off of a minor, Internet craze of a song (look a Kreayshawn, Chief Keef, Trinidad James). So knowing who’s next is difficult. But talent always shines through, and talent, is what Schoolboy Q has. He already has a few things going for him. 1) He’s part of Kendrick Lamar’s Top Dawg Entertainment. Instant, legit co-sign. 2) Because he’s part of TDE, he already has majority of Kendrick Lamar’s fans rooting for him. 3) The dude is super talented. I think of all the buzzing rappers right now, Schoolboy Q is definitely goin to be one to lookout for in 2013.
