They were originally selected by Robin Antin to be the new Pussycat Dolls, but when Robin realized that the PCD direction wasn’t the way to go anymore, the girls became G.R.L. No longer are they the super sexy, seductresses (like PCD was), but GRL is a more girl next door sexy. It’s more of a “Katy Perry if she could dance” vibe. Signed to RCA Records & Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records, GRL is set to take over in 2013 thanks to connections with pop’s elite.
Working with Max Martin, Dr. Luke on the production, and Bonnie McKee on the lyrics, “Vacation” is typical top 40 pop fare. It’s nothing we haven’t heard from Katy or Taylor or Britney in the last 2 years. But the video makes up for that. With a cameo appearance by girl group superstar Mel B, the “Vacation” visual makes you forget how open the girl group lane is, and how easily the sexy ladies can fill it, with the right songs. Check out the “Vacation” video below:
You may recognize Simone Battle (the black girl) from the first season of X Factor USA. You may recognize Lauren Bennett (the long haired blonde) from LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem. And of course, you probably know Paula Van Oppen (the Amber Rose look-a-like) from FOX’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’ The other two, Vanessa Slayton (great name, lol) and Emmalyn Estrada are more unknown to the world. The thing I do like about these girls is that the talent is there. As you can see, there’s not one clear lead singer, like a Beyonce or Nicole Scherzinger. My gripe is the basicness of the song. Even being signed to Dr. Luke, they have to come up with something a little fresher than this if they want to survive past the 1 or 2 year mark.
