Recently, we caught up with the beautiful singer/rapper/dancer/poet/artist Brave Williams to talk to her about her upcoming solo debut project! Many of you may know her as the blonde bombshell from girl group, RichGirl, but there’s much more to Brave Williams.
Hi Brave! First off, thanks for talking with us!
Absolutely, .. thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my story.
First off, tell a little bit about your background, and how you got your start in the industry?
I started professionally in the girl group RichGirl. We were signed to Jive Records and toured with Beyonce opening her ‘I AM…Sasha Fierce’ Tour.
I’ve been following your career ever since the early days of RichGirl. I was a huge fan of the group, but unfortunately due to some behind-the-scenes issues and label politics, you guys disbanded. How was that entire experience for you? And what was the biggest lesson you learned from that experience?
The experience was a complete blessing. I grew so much on that tour as an artist. Performing on front of 60k+ people was a true honor. The biggest lesson I learned while on that tour was learning personally from Beyonce, how to sustain my breath while dancing. It’s a serious art, and I began the process of cracking the code, lol
Do you think we could ever get a potential Brave x Sevyn Streeter collaboration?
I learned so much from Sevyn during those years in Richgirl. She was and is a beautiful spirit. Vocally, I learned some amazing techniques. She congratulated me on my single “Oooh Luv Ya”, and I’ve congratulated her on all her success. A collaboration could be possible. Timing is everything.
Now since RichGirl, we’ve seen you slowly develop into Brave Williams, the solo artist. Was that transition something that was hard to come into or was it easy for you?
Because of my group, the knowledge I gained, the understanding made available to me while in the group, the transition was a smooth one. I learned the type of stamina and endurance an artist has to have to pursue this. That lesson is priceless.
The title of your debut EP is Fearless. How’d you come up with the name?
In this journey I learned that fear has never told me the truth. Fear has always projected a different outcome than what reality and my Father intended for me. I know in order to do this with a passionate heart, a pure, honest heart that breeds success, you have to be fearless.
You just dropped the video for your first single, “Oooh Luv Ya”! Congrats! Tell us a little bit about the song, and how you came up with the concept for the video. It looked like a really good time!
We had a ball shooting it. Chris Robinson Jr. Is such an amazing talented director. We clicked instantly creatively and he delivered the feel I wanted. Fresh, vibrant, fun, colorful, sassy….me.. Sekinah Le’stage did an awesome job at creating that vibe through the choreography. She made it “effortless,” and that’s what I wanted. Candy Shields (writer of Oooh Luv Ya) made a cameo. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.
Is the vibe of “Oooh Luv Ya” what we can expect from your upcoming EP Fearless, or are there a lot more sides to Brave we’ve yet to see? I know you are a dope rapper and even have some killer spoken word pieces. Will we see that come out in your music as well?
Yes! Yes! And YES! The Fearless EP will be the most intimate, honest, view into Brave’s life. From relationships, to heart breaks, to going out with your girls. It’s honest. Musically? It’s a marriage of hip hop and R&B. I love hip-hop so I wanted to make sure the tracks were very beat driven. Ivan Barias, Milk n Sizz, Biz, Jay Fenix, L-Roc, delivered on production in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Candy Shields and Tytewriter penned some amazing records as well!
What do you draw on for your inspiration when you’re writing raps or verses for your songs?
It’s the biggest oxymoron ,.. but pain, heartbreak, make for the best inspiration. Relationships, the happy moments, the in between moments.. every emotion that’s felt. Life.
When do you hope to release Fearless and are there any collaborations we can look forward to?
Fearless drops in September. The collaborations are a surprise! Stay tuned, you never know…
Who is on your list of dream collaborations?
Aside from music, what are some of your favorite pastimes/hobbies?
I box, paint and have a work out that can hang with the best of athletes.
At the end of your career, what do you want the world to think about Brave Williams?
That’s all the questions we have for you, Brave! Do you have anything you want to say to your fans!?
Yes! I want to tell all of the Bravehearts out there thank you so much for all your support and love! Please tweet and instagram me @BmoreBrave to share with me your thoughts about my music and to say hello. :*
