Could Mi.Mu Gloves Be the Future of Music? | DOPE BLOG

Although wearable technology is yet to really kick off amongst the masses, this new piece of equipment shows us just how advanced it has become already. Led by British musician Imogen Heap and Thomas Mitchell of Bristol University, the pair of high-tech musical gloves are able to amplify, record, loop and manipulate sounds through movement and hand gestures. The Mi.Mu gloves were first demoed back in 2011 as part of the TedGlobal conference in Scotland. Now, almost three years later, Heap and her team have decided to put the gloves on popular crowd-funding website Kickstarter, with the hopes of making them more accessible to the world. Speaking to Wired.co.uk, Heap says, “we’ve been keeping a tally of people who’ve wanted to be involved and quickly realised that this wasn’t just for me anymore – this was something other people were wanting to get their hands on.”

The money raised through the campaign will be used to help finalise the design  and also to help reduce any complexity in its setup to the average musician. In terms of its cost, Heap has revealed that the plan is to get the gloves as cheap as a keyboard and mouse. “It’s not actually very expensive at all for what it is, but it’s much more expensive than we want it to be. Freeing yourself up from the computer when you’re writing music is just something which just feels so fantastic.”

Just as we saw with YouTube and Instagram, this piece of technology effectively puts more power into the hands of ordinary, unskilled people, and that is something truly exciting.
