It is with great pleasure that I share with the Dope Fam some new material from a fellow Syracuse University alum, whom I’ve gotten to see from the sidelines, do great things with his music career. Guy Harrison is a New Jersey-native emcee who has been fully pushing his music career since is he dropped his first mixtape Freshman Orientation at the age of 17. His very first musical effort generated some small buzz in both his home town of Voorhees, NJ and on the campus of Syracuse University, where he eventually met producer/student mattMiGGZ whom he’d continue to work with to this day, and create the Backhand Fam.
Following the release of Freshman Orientation, Harrison dropped his second and third solo mixatpes (both in 2011) The Deadline and Train of Thought, securing him gigs as an opening act for artists such as Mac Miller, Chris Webby, Hoodie Allen, Aer, Cassidy, Asher Roth, Action Bronson, Tyga and Fabolous! Over the last few years he has since released another solo mixtape, and a variety of collaborative projects as a member of the Backhand Fam music collective.
The 22-year-old rapper is now back with his latest project, the Entry Level EP which brings his charismatic flow, evocative word play and old soul/hip-hop influence, to the forefront. The 8-track EP is released today, on the 1 year anniversary of our graduation from Syracuse and Guy Harrison hopes “it hits home for our class and the upcoming graduates the day after 2015 graduation.” he tells me via email. He further expresses the concept of Entry Level and its correlation between his music career and the large expectations that come with being a recent college graduate (applying to many unfulfilling 9-to-5 entry-level jobs), as actually:
” [not being] much different from the entry level process. Applying to jobs is like submitting music to blogs – it all starts with the belief in yourself that you’re qualified. #ENTRYLEVEL is a mindset — put 100% into whatever you do from the start and have the end goal in mind and you’ll get to where you want to be.“
You can stream and download Entry Level, and watch the visual for the title-track after the jump!
Standout Tracks: “Entry Level”, “Breaking A Habit”, and “Legacy”
Guy Harrison has taken matters into his own hands and has used his college education to better his music career, ie: creating his new website, logo, and album artwork. The hard work definitely shows and this EP is another reassuring testament to his talent and bright future.
