If I said I chose to write this blog based purely on this man’s talent, I wouldn’t exactly be telling the truth. You see, Jordan Rakei lives in the same city as me (Brisbane, Australia), and I have been a fan of his voice since he first began covering songs on YouTube. To see this video come across my Newsfeed was not only a surprise, but also somewhat gratifying, in the sense that someone so close to home is being recognised, and actually has the potential to go really far. I guess it comes from being a fan of somebody so early in their career, that you kind of share their success with them and want to see them do well.
But I digress. What we have here is a young, soulful musician, comparable to the likes of John Legend, D’Angelo and many more from that neo-soul music field. He first started to gain exposure on Triple J, which (for those of you who are unfamiliar) is a radio station here in Australia, often credited for playing smash hit songs, well before their time. Vocally, he is outstanding – managing to match, if not top, some of the greats in his own versions of their songs. And with respect to his own sound, it’s the kind of stuff that you can really get lost into. There’s beautiful melodies, smooth vocals and carefully-written lyrics that, together, help take you to another world.
I really can’t say anything more, other than to check out his music below and listen for yourself. If you like what you hear, then be sure to keep an eye out for his debut EP Franklin’s Room, dropping September 27th.
