Plaza Signs To OVO Sound, Releases ‘Shadow’ EP | DISCOVER

Yesterday on the 45th episode of OVO Sound Radio, Oliver El-Khatib announced that a new artist, Plaza, had been signed to the OVO Sound label. Who TF is Plaza?

Well, Plaza is yet another super talented singer from The 6. Vocally, Plaza sounds like a mix of OVO’s finest. A little Majid, a little mixtape Abel, a little DVSN & PND. He released his debut EP, One, back in September but it’s the newly released Shadow EP that’s caught our ear. And so far, we’re loving what we’re hearing. “Personal” is an early fave. Check out Shadow below and get ready to hear a lot more from Plaza in the coming months.

James Scott – black chevy coupe | NEW MUSIC

New James Scott is here! “black chevy coupe” is the first offering from his upcoming project, s̶t̶r̶e̶s̶s̶, HAPPINESS,  ᵍ͟ʳ͟ᵉ͟ʸ͟ ͟ᵃ͟ʳ͟ᵉ͟ᵃ͟‧͟

“black chevy coupe” is produced by up-and-coming EDM DJ k?d, and sees James Scott in a place of reflection. The alternative R&B track is definitely one that will trigger memories and make you reminisce, like all dope songs in this genre do. Think Frank Ocean. Think Bryson Tiller. Check out “black chevy coupe” below:

Kidä – Girls | DISCOVER

We’re so glad to have discovered Kidä, a LA-based singer and producer. The Egyptian/Swedish Kidä is formerly a background singer for Pharrell and Carly Simon, and now she’s making her own music. With vocals that are reminiscent of Sade and Aaliyah, Kidä’s song “Girls” is a nature banger that we didn’t know we need. We say “nature banger” because it sounds whimsical; like something you’d hear at a super exclusive, futuristic party held in a botanical gardens. That probably made no sense, but let the audio paint the visual for you below.

Kidä’s EP is due in the coming months. Stay tuned!

RECAP: The 2017 BUKU Music + Art Project Was The Definition of Lit

As the title says, the 2017 BUKU Music + Art Project was the definition of lit. The boutique festival is a perfectly curated world of hip hop and EDM that takes place in a city like no other. We covered this years’ fest have recapped with our photos from our favorite performers. Check them out below!

Kaiydo

Kaiydo was the first performer of the festival, and he didn’t let that get to him. Known for his Soundcloud smash “Fruit Punch”, Kaiydo proved why he’s going to be a big deal in rap in 2017. Currently, he’s taking over SXSW and next month, he’s heading out on tour with Kemba, Boogie and Michael Christmas.

Alina Baraz

The gorgeous Alina Baraz slowed things down on a cloudy, chilly Day 2 with her sultry and dreamy tunes. Alina is another name to look out for in 2017. Signed to Mom & Pop Music, Alina’s currently on her Let’s Get Lost tour and has a new single with Khalid entitled “Electric”. This fall, she’ll be joining Coldplay on their stadium tour. Epic!

Run The Jewels

It’s gets no better than Run The Jewels. When Killer Mike and El-P take to the stage, you better be ready for the frenetic, high-octane sounds that are about to take over your body. They absolutely destroyed BUKU’s Power Plant stage!

Ambré Perkins

Ambré Perkins has been a name that’s been on our radar for quite a while now (thanks to her friendship with Kehlani), but it wasn’t until her Day 2 set at BUKU that we fell in love. The young New Orleans native stunned with her amazing voice, relatable lyrics, epic production mixes and guitar playing skills. After the festival was over, we dove into Ambre’s 2090s album and fell even more with the 20 year old’s music. Definitely be on the look out for more from Ambré in 2017.

Vince Staples

I didn’t start getting into Vince Staples until his Primadonna project, but once I heard that, I was hooked. “Norf Norf” became my anthem like I was from Long Beach (I’m far from it). Maybe even more impressive then Vince’s music is his live performance stage show. His creative team and lighting guys definitely deserve huge credit for what they were able to pull off! I can’t wait to hear more from Vince soon. His ‘Big Fish Theory’ album should be dropping very soon! 🙏

Sleigh Bells

I had never heard of Sleigh Bells before checking out their set. But the moment they took to the stage, lead singer Alexis Krauss blew me out of the photo pit with her insane rockstar presence. Sheer badass-ness; Sleigh Bells was definitely a highlight that I wasn’t ready for.

Aminé

Going into BUKU, Amine really only had two songs on the Internet, so his set was majority new music. And yo…the new music sounds crazy! “Caroline” won’t be the last of Aminé, trust me!

Travis Scott

Going in, I was most excited to see Travis Scott. I missed his set when I attended Made In America Festival last year, so this was my redemption day. And man, Travis did NOT disappoint! He has insane levels of. energy (he literally looks like a mad man on stage), and that energy carries over into the crowd. There were moshpits galore, fans stage diving, Travis climbing to the rafters…it was BUKU crazy.

Juvenile

Juvy, the 504 legend, wasn’t even supposed to perform, but thank God he did! Young Thug was slated to hit the main stage on Friday, but for “personal reasons” canceled his flight to NOLA, thereby canceling his set. So, BUKU organizers called up the legendary Juvenile to deliver a 45-minute set that was twice as crazy as Young Thug could’ve dreamed of. With hits like “Slow Motion”, Back That Azz Up”, “Project Chick”, etc. Juvy def took over for the 99 and the 2000.

Deadmau5

The man. The mouse. The myth. The legend. Deadmau5. Not much to say other than Deadmau5 KILLED. The perfect fest-ending headliner.

thenobodies. – Andy Warhol | NEW MUSIC

Thenobodies are back with another banger for the season, this one entitled
Andy Warhol”.  The NYC-based group, which features singer James Scott, describes the song as salsahiphopelectronica….we describe it as DOPE AF. While they finalize the upcoming chaos, in a beautiful place project, check out one of New York’s best up-and-coming collectives in action below.

Fifth Harmony performs at Family Gras in Metairie, LA | PHOTOS

Mardi Gras in New Orleans just got a lot hotter. With NBA All-Star Weekend also in town, this weekend was jam-packed with epic events. One of the most epic: Fifth Harmony’s first performance in New Orleans. The Family Gras performance also marked the group’s first concert as a quartet (that’s 4, if you’re wondering). Check out the photos below:

DISCOVER | Sonder

Man, the 90’s are really back.

Meet: Sonder. Sonder is you’re favorite new “group”, made up of vocalist Brent Faiyaz (who hails from Baltimore) and producers Dpat and Atu. Soothing rhythms and smooth vocals mesh together to make Sonder a welcome member of today’s R&B scene. With Sonder’s debut project ‘Into’, long gone are the trap basslines and snare drums that we’ve gotten used to from our “singers” over the past few years. Pianos, harmonies, guitars and singing in-pocket are back and sound so damn right.

Check out Sonder’s ‘Into’ EP below:

MAAD (feat. Ro James) – Touch Me | NEW MUSIC

NYC based singer-songwriter, DJ and model MAAD continues her unstoppable rise on the music scene with the release of her new track “Touch Me” featuring the Grammy nominated soul artist Ro James. The track is the follow-up to “90s Love” – which was released at the end of 2016 and has amassed over 100,000 streams – and will feature on MAAD’s upcoming debut EP, Le Funk.

“Touch Me” is gritty and seductive at the same time; the Ro James feature was perfect to fit that mood. The track feels old-school, but remains extremely current at the same time. Premiered last night on Apple Music’s Beats 1 with Ebro Darden, “Touch Me” is currently receiving tons of praise, from us included. Check out “Touch Me” below:

DISCOVER | Jessie Reyez

The moment we heard her voice, we were hooked.

Jessie Reyez sings with so much passion and honesty; it’s truly refreshing to hear in an era of music where everything is pitch-perfect and computed.

Hailing from Toronto (there’s so much talent coming out of the 6!), Jessie Reyez has been singing since she was 3 years old and recording music since she was 8. Though, she admits that it wasn’t until she turned 18 and went through her first heartbreak that she truly found her voice. From there, the Colombian singer was accepted into youth non-profit arts incubator, Remix Project, and began enhancing her songwriting and singing skills with none other than DVSN. She started working with people like King Louie and Wondagurl, and after a while, she started to craft amazing songs like the above “Figures.”

Fast forward to now, and Jessie Reyez has big names starting to take notice of her. One in particular is Zane Lowe, who just premiered her latest, EPIC song, “Shutter Island” on his Beats 1 radio show.

Prepare to hear and see a lot more from Jessie Reyez in 2017!
