Phony Ppl is hands down one of our favorite acts making an enormous amount of noise in the industry at the moment. Blending the sounds of vintage funk, soul infused old-school Hip-Hop and R&B, Phony Ppl’s music can be best described as “feel good” music, or just simply “music for the soul”. To ease some confusion, they have expressed that they ARE NOT a rap group, but a band of multifaceted musicians and composers who have been heavily influenced by funk music legends and pioneers.
Comprised of Elbee Thrie (Vocals), Sheriff PJ (Vocals), Elijah Rawk (Lead Guitar), Matt ‘Maffyuu’ Byas (Drums), Aja Grant (Keyboards), and Bari Bass (Bass Guitar), the Bed-Stuy Brooklyn-natives have continued to rise and make a name for themselves since stepping on the scene in 2011. Recently however, they have released a proper debut album, entitled Yesterday’s Tomorrow. The album was welcomed by huge social media buzz, allowing them to climb Billboards emerging artists lists, powered by Twitter.
Phony Ppl have been on the rise for many years and have added tours with The Roots, Erykah Bahdu and Theophulis London to their resume. They’ve even received an early career cosign from the likes of Chance the Rapper, furthering our conclusion that their music is instrumentally rich, eclectic, and expressively original in its own right; and we love the posi-vibes!
