Year-End Recap: Artist Of The Year

The one and only Drake is our Artist of the Year for 2015. There’s SO many reasons why. Here’s 16:

He released 2 unannounced albums to keep us full until the release of ‘Views From The 6.’

He headlined Coachella; being one of the youngest and only rappers to ever do so.

Drake’s the only rapper to release a platinum album in 2015. Despite Kendrick getting 11 Grammy nominations, ‘TPAB’ isn’t even close to being platinum. But Drake’s IYRTITL album hit a million copies just weeks after release. (J. Cole’s 2014FHD album went platinum in March, but was released in 2014).

“Know Yourself” — people who can’t even point to Toronto on a map want to “run through the 6” with their woes.

Announcing Apple Music at Apple’s WWDC.

OVO Sound Radio. A.K.A. – the reason why millions of people signed up for Apple Music to begin with.

“Hotline Bling”. What started as a freebie/ode to D.R.A.M.’s hit-of-the-moment “Cha Cha”, turned into one of the biggest songs of the year, in any genre. It’s still sitting at #3 on the Hot 100, 6+ months after it’s release. 283,000,000 video views and counting.

Serena Williams. Drake took down a sports icon. They denied their relationship, but it was VERY CLEAR that the 21-time Grand Slam Champion was feeling the Champagne Papi.

Drake has officially become the most memed music artist of all time. And the best part: he’s in on the joke.

The utter domination of the Meek Mill beef.

He helped make Fetty Wap one of 2015’s biggest success stories, thanks to the “My Way” remix. Now, there’s no stopping Fetty.

He turned Future from a street rapper to an A-list rapper. (Well, Ciara helped do that too, but mostly Drake.)

“Jumpman” is a street anthem, and currently sitting in the top 15 on the Hot 100. Every wants to be Drake; black, white, yellow, purple.

“Big Rings”. Beats by Dre commericals. Best Buy commericials. Drake is corporate America’s favorite new black guy.

There’s 16 reasons. And I’m sure there’s at least 16 more. Drake was the artist of the year, HANDS DOWN. He shifted culture. He WAS the culture. 6ix God. Champagne Papi. Aubrey Graham.
